The general principles of foreign exchange regulation in the Republic of Moldova, the rights and obligations of persons when importing and exporting cash, including cash in foreign currency and in national currency, are laid down in the Law on foreign exchange regulation no. 62-XVI of 21.03.2008 (Chapter III).
Entry into the Republic of Moldova
The amount of cash the traveller can take into the Republic of Moldova in national currency, as well as cash and traveller’s checks in foreign currency is not limited.
Declaring the imported cash
Individuals are required to declare in writing to the customs authorities the amounts exceeding 10,000 euro (or their equivalent) per person/trip.
Individuals have the right to declare in writing amounts not exceeding 10,000 euro (or their equivalent) per person/trip.

(*) provided that confirmation documents for any amount exceeding 10,000 euro (or their equivalent) are presented to the customs authorities, namely:
- customs documents confirming when the money was taken into the Republic of Moldova; and/or
- permits for taking money out of the Republic of Moldova, issued by licensed banks, and/or authorizations for taking money out of the Republic of Moldova, issued by the National Bank of Moldova.
Under the Law on customs tariff no.1380 of 20.11.97, national currency, foreign currency (except the one used for numismatic purposes), as well as securities are exempted from customs duty.
Leaving the Republic of Moldova
- amounts under 10,000 euro (or their equivalent*)
individuals are entitled to take cash in national currency, as well as cash and traveller's checks in foreign currency out of the country in a total amount not exceeding 10,000 euro (or their equivalent) per person/trip, without presenting any confirmation documents to the customs authorities.
- amounts exceeding 10,000 euro (or their equivalent *), but not exceeding 50,000 euro (or their equivalent *)
individuals are entitled to take cash in national currency, as well as cash and traveller's checks in foreign currency out of the country in the amounts exceeding 10,000 euro (or their equivalent), but not exceeding 50,000 euro (or their equivalent) per person/trip, provided that they present confirmation documents to the customs authorities for any amount exceeding 10,000 euro (or their equivalent), namely:
a) customs documents confirming when the money was taken into the Republic of Moldova; and/or
b) permits for taking money out of the Republic of Moldova, issued by licensed banks, and/or authorizations for taking money out of the Republic of Moldova, issued by the National Bank of Moldova.
- Amounts exceeding 50,000 euro (or their equivalent*)
Amounts exceeding 50,000 euro (or their equivalent) may be transferred from the Republic of Moldova within current and capital foreign exchange operations, payments and transfers to/from abroad between residents and non-residents, pursuant to the provisions of Articles 17, 18 and 23 of the Law on foreign exchange regulation no. 62-XVI of 21.03.2008.
Declaration of cash upon leaving the country
Individuals are required to declare in writing to the customs authorities the amounts exceeding 10,000 euro (or their equivalent) per person/trip.
Failure to declare entails liability according to the legislation in force.
Individuals have the right to declare in writing amounts not exceeding 10,000 euro (or their equivalent) per person/trip.
- Individuals are not allowed to take in/out of the Republic of Moldova cash in national currency, as well as cash and traveller's checks in foreign currency in a baggage unaccompanied by the individual.
*the equivalent of the amounts in the respective currencies is calculated by applying the official exchange rate of the Moldovan leu established by the National Bank of Moldova on the day of crossing the state border of the Republic of Moldova.
Legal entities
Legal entities can take cash in foreign and in national currency, as well as traveller’s checks in foreign currency in cases set forth in Article 30 of the Law on foreign exchange regulation no. 62-XVI of 21.03.2008.
Cash is taken into/out of the Republic of Moldova by individuals - representatives of legal entities.
